Selecting texts for classroom instruction implies a layered approach. That is, choosing a text for students to read, interpret and respond to suggests that teacher has addressed the following: purposes/objectives for selecting the text, the conditions under which students will read, interpret and respond to it, and the desired outcomes. What I will focus on here is the first part: the purposes and objectives, including contextual factors built into these.
